President Prabowo Subianto recently addressed the issue of corrupt practices within Indonesia’s rice trade during the 27th anniversary of the National Awakening Party (PKB). He highlighted the detrimental impact of companies repackaging and inflating the price of subsidized rice, estimating that these activities cost the country up to Rp100 trillion annually. Prabowo strongly criticized the unethical behavior, emphasizing that the government subsidizes various aspects of rice production only for the final product to be marked up and sold at significantly higher prices. He disclosed that 212 rice milling companies have been implicated in such practices and called for consequences, stating that these companies must return the profits gained through dishonest means. This misconduct was classified as criminal and denounced for plundering the people and violating the nation’s Constitution. President Prabowo has taken decisive action by instructing the National Police Chief and the Attorney General to investigate, prosecute, and confiscate assets involved in the fraudulent rice trade. He underlined that these actions are not driven by personal motives but are in accordance with the constitutional mandate to control sectors essential to the state, such as rice, corn, and cooking oil. Prabowo’s determination to address this issue stems from a desire to uphold the Constitution and prevent further losses that could otherwise be allocated to vital improvements in public services.
