The indie-folk sibling band from Kuantan, Malaysia, The Impatient Sisters, has returned to spread joy through their latest single, “Gempita Hari Raya,” released to celebrate the festive spirit of Eid. This song is a special tribute to listeners in Indonesia and Malaysia, combining retro swing-jazz vibes reminiscent of legends like Saloma, The King Sisters, and Count Basie with the unique humor that the trio of sisters brings.
Not only that, but the song was launched as a double single along with a Malay version titled “Galok Raya,” introducing the linguistic and cultural uniqueness of both countries that are similar yet different. “Gempita Hari Raya” tells the story of a young woman trying to find love amidst the hustle and bustle of Eid. With witty lyrics and energetic brass arrangements, the song highlights her anxiety in facing questions like “when are you getting married?” from extended family members, while capturing the spirit of joy and warmth of the festive traditions.
Collaborating with Indonesian producer Ari Renaldi, known for his work with artists like Tulus, Yura, and Yovie Widianto, was a special highlight of this project. Although their musical friendship has been long-standing, this was the first time Ari and The Impatient Sisters worked together on a song. The creative process for “Gempita Hari Raya” was swift. Impressed by the uniqueness of “Galok Raya” filled with poetic lyrics and cheerful melody, Ari and Rina Khairani adapted the Malay lyrics into Indonesian without losing the poetic meaning.
In less than three days, the song went through the production stage at Aru Studio, Bandung, with live instrument recordings involving local musicians. Ari Renaldi handled the arrangement and production to ensure the freshness of the music while blending retro jazz vibes with modern dynamics. Soraya Taib, one of the members of The Impatient Sisters, expressed that this collaboration was their way of celebrating the cultural closeness between Indonesia and Malaysia. “We want listeners in both countries to feel the same joy during Eid, even with different languages,” she said.
The two songs were intentionally released together as an appreciation for the linguistic and traditional diversity that characterizes Southeast Asia. As a music group that has been active in the indie scene since 2011, The Impatient Sisters—comprising Soraya, Nazeera, and Irena Taib—have proven their presence through accolades like MTV Iggy’s Artist of the Week (2013) and performances at various international festivals, including Urbanscapes Malaysia, Mosaic Music Festival Singapore, and as opening acts for The Jezabels and Fleet Foxes.
Now, through “Gempita Hari Raya,” they aim to bring back the nostalgia of the Eid season with a new and relevant style for the younger generation. The song has been available on all digital streaming platforms since March 28, 2025, through the Jakarta-based label demajors. With a combination of relatable lyrics, vibrant arrangements, and cross-country collaboration, “Gempita Hari Raya” is expected to be the perfect soundtrack for family gatherings, cooking ketupat, and the laughter that fills the Eid celebrations.
