Kanekuro, unit post-punk from Denpasar, Bali, is back to enliven the Indonesian music scene by releasing their fourth EP, ‘Massamerta.’
EP brings up a major theme that highlights social intricacies in society, depicting the dark and secret side that occurs in two worlds—both the real world and the virtual world, which are now inseparable from daily life.
With five songs filling the EP “Massamerta”, Kanekuro presents a deep study of dark social phenomena, such as hatred, numbness, excessive ambition, and celebrating the suffering of others. They explore various negative aspects that are often hidden in social interactions, both in real life and on social media, where manipulation and conflicts often occur.
The opening song “Serikat Sekarat” depicts a phenomenon where a group of people seems to lose their sense of peace, showing how vulnerable we are to division and conflict. The lyrics contain sharp criticism of individuals or groups who enjoy chaos and avoid harmony.
Then, there is “Asasinasi,” which talks about a society trapped in unhealthy ambition, competing to criminalize issues in the digital world. In an era of information filled with fear and paranoia, Kanekuro emphasizes how quickly the public judges each other based solely on online opinions.
The song “Dansa Duka” brings a unique atmosphere—dark yet cheerful. This song depicts the ironic nature of humans, celebrating the misfortune that befalls others as if it were a personal party. With a catchy rhythm but sarcastic lyrics, “Dansa Duka” becomes one of the highlights of this EP.
Next, “Peti dan Tubuh” presents a simple yet meaningful revenge metaphor. This song reflects the hatred that grows from the surrounding environment, where someone’s suffering is considered entertainment or even satisfaction for others.
As a finale, this EP presents “CYAO,” a bonus track that is a collaboration between Kanekuro and musician Dezhimer. This song contains a strong farewell message, leaving a deep impression on the listener.
“Massamerta” is released under the auspices of Skullism Records, and is now available on various digital music platforms.
With this EP, Kanekuro not only offers stimulating music but also relevant and provocative social messages, making “Massamerta” a work worth listening to and reflecting on.
