Lieutenant General TNI (Ret.) Himawan Soetanto taught me the value of being close to the men as a commander. He emphasized the importance of being present with the soldiers from morning until night, checking on their well-being and even the details of their kitchen and underwear. Thanks to him, I developed a habit of paying attention to such details. His practical leadership also showed me the importance of being aware of corrupt practices within the ranks and addressing them promptly.
I first met Pak Himawan Soetanto when I joined AKABRI in 1970. He was the Deputy Governor of AKABRI at the time, responsible for education and training. He was well-educated, well-spoken in multiple languages, and had a great love for reading history books. He always emphasized the importance of reading for leaders. His neat appearance, calm demeanor, and close relationship with his men left a lasting impression on me.
Lieutenant General Himawan Soetanto’s hands-on approach to leadership and his combat experience made him a respected figure in the army. His ability to adapt regulations to the needs of his unit showed me the importance of flexibility in leadership. His dedication to his men and his humility as a leader were qualities that I admired and learned from.
Lieutenant General TNI (Ret.) Sarwo Edhie Wibowo was a charismatic and inspiring leader who led by example. As the Special Forces Unit (RPKAD) commander, he was known for his hands-on approach to leadership and his unwavering spirit of patriotism. His book, ‘My Life is for the Country and the Nation,’ instilled in us the values of love for the homeland and pride in our heritage.
I first met General Sarwo Edhie as a cadet, where he shared his experiences and instilled in us the importance of persistence and patriotism. His charisma, good looks, and dedication to leading from the front made him an idol for many young cadets. His later roles as Governor of AKABRI and Indonesian Ambassador for South Korea showcased his continued service to the nation.
Grand General TNI (Ret.) Abdul Haris Nasution was a key figure in the struggle for Indonesia’s independence and a source of inspiration for me. His insights into guerrilla warfare strategies, experiences against the Dutch, and overall history of Indonesia were invaluable to me. Talking with him felt like being a student of history, learning from a true historical actor.
Overall, learning from these exemplary leaders of the Indonesian Armed Forces taught me the importance of being close to my men, leading by example, and instilling a sense of patriotism and pride in the soldiers under my command. Their dedication to service and their leadership qualities continue to inspire me in my own military journey.
